Fixed Asset Rollforward & Capitalization Testing
Ties the fixed asset register to the general ledger by asset class first — and stops completely if it doesn't tie — then tests additions against the capitalization policy, checks whether anything should have been capitalized but was expensed instead, and tests disposals for completeness.

How it works
- Input
- The fixed asset register and the general ledger (pulled from QuickBooks, then saved locally so the numbers don't shift mid-test) and the capitalization policy
- What it does
- Ties the register to the ledger by asset class first, and stops the entire test if it doesn't tie within tolerance → tests every addition against the capitalization policy → scans expense accounts for spending that should have been capitalized → tests disposals for anything that was sold or retired but never taken off the books
- What has to hold true
- If the register doesn't tie to the books, nothing else runs — no sample is drawn and no workpaper gets built against numbers that don't agree in the first place. Every comparison names where each number came from, so two numbers from the same source can never be used to "confirm" each other.
- Output
- A finished Excel workpaper covering all five steps (tie-out, additions, capitalization check, disposals, and validation), plus a supporting file documenting exactly how each conclusion was reached
The part that makes it reproducible
Building blocks it runs on
Shared, independently tested components. They ship bundled inside this skill — there is nothing extra to install.
What you'll need to change for your firm
This runs as published, but every audit function documents things its own way. These are the places it assumes a house format:
- Your capitalization policy and its thresholds
- Your fixed-asset register format and asset-class taxonomy
- The tie-out tolerance you consider acceptable
- Which expense accounts to scan for items that should have been capitalized
Built for Claude
